Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO)

Also known as: Generative Engine Optimization, Generative Engine Optimisation

Optimising content so it is used and represented well by AI systems that generate answers.

GEO focuses on becoming part of the answer that generative systems produce. That means writing clear, factual, well-structured content that an LLM can lift, summarise, and attribute accurately when it composes a response.

Where SEO chases rankings, GEO chases inclusion and accurate representation in AI output. Tactics include unambiguous phrasing, quotable statistics, strong entity signals, and content organised around the questions people actually ask.

Example

A consultancy publishes a crisp, well-sourced explainer on a niche topic. Because it is easy to quote and verify, answer engines repeatedly cite it when users ask about that topic.

Why this matters for AI findability

GEO is the content side of agentic findability. It makes your expertise the material AI reaches for — so your business is named in generated answers rather than paraphrased away or omitted.
