Answer Engine

Also known as: AI search

A system that responds to a query with a synthesised answer instead of a list of links.

An answer engine reads multiple sources and composes a single, direct response — often with citations — rather than returning a ranked page of blue links. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Bing Copilot are all answer engines.

For businesses this changes the goal. You are no longer only competing for a position on a results page; you are competing to be one of the few sources an answer engine reads, trusts, and quotes in the response it generates.

Example

Instead of ten links for "best CRM for small agencies," Perplexity returns a paragraph naming three tools with reasons, footnoted to the pages it drew from. Being one of those footnotes is the new prize.

Why this matters for AI findability

If your content isn't structured and clear enough to be read and quoted, the answer engine builds its reply from your competitors instead. Showing up in synthesised answers — and their citations — is a core outcome of good agentic findability.
